The Very Reverend Samuel G. Candler
Trustee
Samuel Candler is Dean of The Cathedral of St. Philip, a parish of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Atlanta, which he has served since 1998. Prior to his call to lead St. Philip’s, Rev. Candler was Dean of Trinity Cathedral in Columbia, S.C., where he was a member of the Governor’s Commission on Race Relations. Candler previously served pastorates in Marietta and Cumming, Georgia and Summerville, South Carolina.
As an active member of Atlanta’s interfaith community, Candler helped develop its formal structure, the Faith Alliance of Metro Atlanta. Author of the blog commentary, Good Faith and the Public Good, Candler is a frequent teacher and preacher throughout the U.S. and in the wider Anglican Communion. An avid outdoorsman, he speaks regularly on the role of religion in matters of science and environmental sustainability. Before he was called into the priesthood, Candler intended to become a jazz pianist. As a result, he values the role of music in prayer and has served on liturgy and music committees in several dioceses.
Candler received his bachelor’s degree from Occidental College in Los Angeles and graduated magna cum laude from Yale University Divinity School and Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, an Episcopal seminary.
