The Reverend Stephen Lewis is President of The Fund for Theological Education (FTE). He has lead responsibility for the strategic direction of FTE programs and for management of the teams serving Ministry and Doctoral Fellowships, congregational outreach, faith-based volunteer programs, alumni relations and development, communications and administration. An accomplished FTE senior officer and manager, Lewis has eight years of experience guiding FTE programs to support gifted and diverse young leaders and the people and environments that form them.
Lewis joined FTE in 2003 and has served as vice president of FTE programs and national director for its Calling Congregations initiative, an ecumenical, national movement to encourage and equip congregations and church-related organizations to identify future pastoral leaders, and to cultivate the “vocation care” practices that nurture both them and their congregations. He also created and directed FTE’s Project Rising Sun, an innovative leadership program for young pastors from diverse backgrounds.
A former banking officer with experience at Moody’s Investors Service and Bank of America, Lewis was ordained as a Baptist minister in 2003. Before joining FTE, he served as a training manager for the Institute for Church Administration & Management in Atlanta, where he focused on developing business and administrative capacities among clergy and lay leaders. While previously serving as assistant pastor of Trinity Tabernacle Baptist Church in Atlanta, Lewis was a teaching assistant for the Black Church Studies Department at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology.
Lewis holds a Master of Divinity degree from Duke University, where he is a member of the Divinity School’s Board of Visitors, and earned his bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
