In January 2012, Matthew was appointed Director of Fellowships with the Fund for Theological Education. In this role he oversees and administrates Ministry and Doctoral Fellowship programs and related educational initiatives. The Ministry Fellowships program provides financial support to undergraduate and seminary students exploring a call to pastoral ministry, and the Doctoral Fellowships program provides money and mentoring to underrepresented Ph.D./ Th.D. students in bible, religion and theology. The ultimate aim of the Doctoral Fellowships program is to decrease the diversity deficit among faculties in theological schools by supplying the pipeline with future faculty of color for teaching positions.
Matthew directs these programs with a passion and interest in leadership formation, scholarship and social change. He brings to this role over five years of experience within the organization in recruitment, program development and administration.
Prior to coming to FTE, Matthew served at the National Black Leadership Initiative on Cancer at Morehouse School of Medicine. There he coordinated the research, advocacy, and educational initiatives of sixteen community cancer coalitions in ten states in the American South. He holds a Master of Divinity degree from Atlanta’s Interdenominational Theological Center and bachelor’s degrees in both psychology and in philosophy and religion from Florida A&M University. He is an ordained elder in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
