Dr. Juan Martinez

Juan Martinez is associate provost for diversity and international programs and associate professor of Hispanic studies and pastoral leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Since coming to Fuller in 2001, Dr. Martinez has also served as director of the Center for the Study of Hispanic Church and Community. Among other subjects, his current research focuses on the history of Latino Protestantism, Latino Protestant identity, ministry in Latino Protestant churches, Latino and Latin American Anabaptists, and transnational mission among U.S. Latinos.
He joined Fuller from the Latin American Anabaptist Seminary in Guatemala City, Guatemala, where he served as rector for nine years. A Mennonite Brethren pastor, Martinez has extensive experience in church planting and teaching in religious and secular settings. He served as director of Hispanic Ministries for the Pacific District Conference of the Mennonite Brethren Church and of Instituto Biblico del Pacifico, a Mennonite Brethren Bible Institute. As an author, Martinez most recently published the books, “Churches, Cultures and Leadership” and “Los Protestantes: Latino Protestantism in the United States,” as well as numerous articles in the Journal of Mennonite Studies, the Mennonite Quarterly Review and other professional journals. He also administers the blog, Caminando con el pueblo.
Martinez received his Master of Divinity degree from Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary and a Master of Theology degree and Ph.D. from Fuller Theological Seminary.
