What We Have In Common

What do I have in common with James Forbes, Frederick Buechner, and Barbara Brown Taylor?

We are all FTE alumni.

Welcome to FTE Alumnotes, a blog for, by and about FTE alumni/ae and alumni/ae endeavors. We are a diverse group of leaders in the church, the academy, and society. Since 1954, FTE and, more recently, the Transition into Ministry Program, have provided support to over 7000 emerging leaders who have gone on to found campus ministries, pastor countless churches, teach at leading institutions of higher education, and served society through administration and community leadership.

And who am I? My name is Laura, and I am a 2001 Ministry Fellow and the Director of the Leading Generations Initiative at FTE. It is my pleasure to work with alumni/ae of FTE and Transition into Ministry, and coordinate the Transition into Ministry Program with the Lilly Endowment. After graduating from Western Washington University, I did an internship with the Presbyterian United Nations Office. I attended McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, and went on to direct a Lilly-funded project working with young adults and pastors of color. I prefer my coffee organic, dark and fairly traded. I have lived in towns as small as 180 and cities as large as eight million. I like to eat good food with interesting people, and take my two 13-pound dogs hiking. My second language is Spanish. I grew up as a P.K., with first my dad and then my mom becoming Presbyterian ministers. I have lived in California, Oregon, Washington, Illinois, New York, and now Atlanta, GA.

I started with FTE in March as the first person to work with alumni/ae of FTE. This is an exciting time to do this work, and I’m beginning to meet with alums all over the country. I’m always awed by the interesting stories people have to tell of how they engaged in ministry and what they have learned. This past week I was in Indianapolis at the 2010 Transition into Ministry Gathering. Over 80 people, including residents and former residents, gathered and connected over meals and small group times. Each one has a compelling story of call. I hope you have the opportunity to follow this blog and learn about the stories of fellow alums and emerging generations of FTE/TiM alums.

Are you an FTE alumni/ae who would like to contribute? If the answer is yes, please send submissions to lcheifetz@fteleaders.org Subscribe to the blog [here]. Send us photos or updates. We’ll keep you updated on the goings-on of FTE and its alums!
